First off, you need to go to Google Alerts.
Now lets get to the main topic of this posting. (Background first) Google Alerts is a simple and free way to get regular updates about something that interests you. Every time that a new web page appears in the top 20 web results or top 10 news results for the terms you specify, Google Alerts will send you an email.
So, how does this help me get more traffic to my website? The answer is quite simple. In order to keep and or improve your site ranking in search engines...you need to keep your site or blog updated with new and fresh content! And this is where setting up a "Google Alert" will help.
Here are my suggestions/tips for using Google Alerts" to your advantage.
(1) Decide the "keyword or Keywords" that you are interested in! Particularly, the keywords (topic) of your site. A tip that I can share is to get more accurate search results, put your topic in quote ("keyword"). As you start to get alerts from Google in your email box, you will start noticing unwanted words in your results, to get better results from your alerts, go back to your alerts, delete it but put the same previous search back in and add the words that you don't want added behind a "minus" sign. For example, ("Sports news" - hockey, tennis). This will only give you sports results but will exclude hockey and tennis!
(2) Decide how often the alert should be sent, you can choose between "as-it-happens", "once a day" or "once a week". Google will send you emails only when it actually finds new material in the top 20 web results and or the top 10 news results, so you won't be getting alert emails unless Google has something to report. For results that I wanted to be notified quickly, I put them in "as it happens". For a topic that it not that urgent but I want to keep an eye on, I select "once a week". The majority of my Google alerts are set to "once a day".
(3) Decide how you'd like to receive the alerts. You have the option of receiving the alerts from email or in a RSS feed. For each alert you create, a separate email will be sent depending on how often you've chosen to receive it. The second option is that you can also subscribe to the alert via RSS feed in your Google Reader instead of email.
(4) Decide the type of information that you want Google to include in its search. It can be News, Blogs, Web, Comprehensive, Video or Groups. Depending on your needs, you can decide to search only new, or just blogs, or videos. To get all type of searches, use comprehensive.
Now that you have a great free source for content to add to your website, you can keep your site or blog updated with the latest news and information, which should help you to get more traffic to your blog.
